The Best Buy exclusive Steelbook release

AKIRA KUROSAWA’S sweeping action epic “Ran” will arrive in the U.S. from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, with a Best Buy exclusive 4K Ultra HD Steelbook with artwork from artist Zi Xu, and release on November 16.

But, strangely the two-disc set will only include the featurette Ran: The Restoration. The European 4K released earlier this summer from StudioCanal included a Feature-Length Chris Marker Documentary On Akira Kurosawa, Interview With The Director Of Photography – Shôji Ueda, Interview With Ms. Mieko Harada, Interview With Michael Brooke – Author/Journalist and the Stage Appearance At Tokyo International Film Festival 2015.

“Ran” has been beautifully restored in 4K from the 2016 4K master and approved by the director of photography Shôji Ueda.

A reimagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear set in feudal Japan, “Ran” tells the story of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryû – Tôno Monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). This leads to a brutal and bloody war between the brothers for the absolute power of the kingdom.

I'm a HUGE Kurosawa fan. It sure seems that he fanboyed over Shakespeare's plays, because he sure was inspired to adapt many for his movies themes. And to great results. And this is no exception...I had the DVD and bought the Blu Ray as well.

I look forward to a full review of this release, I'm not a steel book fan but to those that are it's just that added value in the mix, thanks again Bill!!
